The Department of Nutrition is dedicated to advancing our understanding of the roles that nutrition, food, and community factors play in human health and in disease prevention, progression and management. The department’s strength is the vast array of diverse and interdisciplinary approaches to studying the complex internal, environmental and lifestyle factors that impact health and disease. Research areas in the Department span the gamut of basic and applied research, including molecular mechanisms of nutrient actions, metabolic function and dysfunction at the whole cell, tissue and whole-body levels, optimization of individual and community nutrition, development of monitoring and intervention approaches to improve health, and systems biology and omic sciences. Through collaborative research with hospitals, governments, food banks, community and academic institutions, the department’s research initiatives impact the health and well-being of people in Cleveland, across the US and globally.
